Delicious Homemade Easy Recipes with Creme Fraiche Dessert
When you have some Crème Fraîche in the fridge, you can turn a simple bowl of fruit into a dessert that looks like it cost thirty dollars at a hotel. In our culture, we love fresh fruit after a big meal, but adding this creamy element makes it extra special. This recipe is my favorite because it is not too sweet, so you don't feel "jelak" (overly full or greasy) after eating it. It is the perfect balance of creamy and refreshing!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of fresh mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries work best)
- 1 cup of homemade Crème Fraîche
- 2 tablespoons of good quality honey or maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- A little bit of lemon zest for that fresh smell
- Fresh mint leaves for garnish (to make it look very professional)
Instructions:
- First, wash your berries very carefully and pat them dry with a paper towel. If the strawberries are big, you can cut them into halves or quarters so they are easy to eat.
- In a small mixing bowl, take your Crème Fraîche and whisk it gently with the honey and vanilla extract. You don't need to whip it like heavy cream; just stir it until it is smooth and the honey is well incorporated.
- Taste it! If you like it sweeter, you can add one more teaspoon of honey. We always adjust to our own taste at home, right?
- Take your serving glasses or nice ceramic bowls. Place a generous portion of the berries at the bottom.
- Spoon a big, beautiful dollop of the sweetened Crème Fraîche right on top of the berries.
- Sprinkle the lemon zest over the top and add a mint leaf. Serve this immediately while the fruit is cold. It is so simple but everyone will be so impressed with the taste!
How to Make Crème Fraîche at Home with Just Two Ingredients
Now, I am going to tell you a secret. You do not need to buy those expensive imported tubs from the shop. You can actually make Crème Fraîche in your own kitchen using only two ingredients that you probably already have in your shopping basket. It is much cheaper and the taste is very fresh. The only thing you need is a little bit of patience because it needs to sit on your counter overnight to thicken up and get that signature tangy flavor.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of Heavy Cream (make sure it is the full-fat version, not the low-fat one!)
- 2 tablespoons of Buttermilk (this is the magic ingredient that has the live cultures)
Instructions:
- Find a very clean glass jar, like an old jam jar or a mason jar. Make sure it is washed well and dried.
- Pour your heavy cream into the jar and then add the two tablespoons of buttermilk.
- Give it a good stir with a clean spoon or put the lid on and give it a gentle shake to make sure they are well mixed.
- Now, here is the part that feels like magic: remove the lid and cover the top of the jar with a clean piece of cheesecloth or a paper towel. Secure it with a rubber band. This lets the cream "breathe" while it transforms.
- Leave the jar on your kitchen counter at room temperature. Don't put it in the fridge yet! It needs to sit there for about 12 to 24 hours. If your kitchen is very warm, it might be ready in 12 hours. If it is cooler, it might need the full day.
- Check it after 12 hours. It should be thick and have a slight wobble. Once it is thick, put the solid lid on and put it in the refrigerator.
- Let it chill for at least 6 hours in the fridge. It will get even thicker as it cools down. This homemade version stays fresh for about one to two weeks. You can use it for desserts, or even stir it into your curry or pasta sauce to make it extra creamy!
